Getting Started

Overview

The Manulife Developer Portal provides developers with access to FHIR APIs and related documentation. The portal allows users to browse available APIs, review endpoint documentation, view request and response schemas, generate access tokens, and test API operations directly from the portal.

This guide provides step-by-step instructions for using the main features of the Developer Portal, including authentication, API documentation, schema definitions, and API testing.

Request Access

Register in developer portal and request access to APIs by sending email to GB_IT_API_Support@manulife.ca. Once access is granted, you will be provided with the following details:

  • FHIR URL of Sandbox and client's own FHIR URL

  • Credentials for the sandbox and client's url.

Credentials

client_credentials is the grant_type used in FHIR API authentication. The credentials will be provided once access is verified and granted.

Get a token

Once the credentials are provided, you should now be able to request token using the provided credentials. Below is an example token request.

Token API Request

POST {auth_url}/ext/opaque-oauth/token
{
"client_id": "{{client_id}}",
"client_secret": "{{client_secret}}",
"grant_type": "client_credentials"
}

Token Response

{
"access_token": **opaque_token**,
"token_type": "Bearer",
"issued_at": "1785162810",
"expires_in": 300
}

The opaque_token will be used as the Bearer token for FHIR API requests.

Make your first api call

For your first api call, we can use GET /Patient endpoint.

Request:

GET {fhir_url}/Patient
Headers:
Authorization: Bearer {opaque_token}

Response:
